Liberty Wells Community Council committees are made up of board members and community members. They meet monthly to address specific projects and issues.

Executive committEe

Caitlin Lutsch, chair
The executive committee consists of the five executive officers: chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer, and parliamentarian.

urban forestry SUBCOMMITTEE (UFS)

Ross Chambless, chair
The purpose of the Urban Forestry Subcommittee is to ensure that trees located within the boundaries of the community council receive the care they need, especially when it comes to watering newly planted trees. UFS will be informed of newly planted “community trees” in the park strips, will help build support systems to care for trees, will alert Urban Forestry when tree-related issues are spotted, and will play a key role in supporting city-wide planting efforts as well as Mayor Mendenhall’s “1,000 Trees” Initiative.

Finance committee

Casey Pappas, chair
The finance committee is responsible for establishing accounting policies for the community council and fulfilling its financial responsibilities.

Community Planning and Facilities

Caitlin Lutsch, chair
We collaborate with city departments, neighborhood residents and other stakeholders on enhancing Liberty Wells parks, sidewalks, bike lanes, transportation routes, and other assets within our neighborhood. We also create opportunities for public engagement on ongoing development projects and coordinate community responses to permit requests and related activities.

Marketing and Communications

Ross Chambless, chair
We promote community connection and amplify the voice of the community council. The marketing committee oversees public outreach through the LWCC website, email newsletter, social media channels and block parties.

community gardens

Maeve McClellan, chair
Come garden with us at the Ron Heaps Memorial Park community garden. Located just north of Liberty Elemenary at 256 East Herbert Avenue, the garden reserves three plots for Liberty Elementary School in coordination with Wasatch Community Gardens. The remaining plots are free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Volunteers help with the seasonal care and coordination of community garden plots, watering systems, and overall appearance.

LIBERTY PARK farmer’s market

Valerie Vaughn and Olivia Rossi, co-chairs
Every Friday evening from June through October, Liberty Park Market brings people into the park for good food and good company — creating a strong neighborhood presence and enhancing community. The market promotes health and wellness by helping local farms and businesses provide fresh produce, packaged goods, and handmade items directly to residents. We partner with Urban Food Connections to make SNAP benefits and Double Up Food Bucks available to low-income community members. Volunteers are needed to help with market setup and teardown, bike valet, and guest and vendor services.

Safety and Preparedness

Liberty Wells has several resources available to help residents get involved in public safety — from neighborhood watch groups to emergency response training courses. We help connect neighbors with these and other resources while uniting the community around creative solutions to improve safety and quality of life

BRITISH FIELD DAy

Bill Davis, chair
For 27 years, British Field Day has welcomed hundreds of fans of British cars, trucks, motorcycles, and specialty vehicles to Liberty Park on Father’s Day weekend. Proceeds from the event support the Liberty Wells Community Council and the Salt Lake Arts Academy. Volunteers are needed to help with event planning, setup, and teardown, as well as with admissions the day of the event.

FIRST ENCAMPMENT CELEBRATION

Steven Hunt and Marilyn Oblad, co-chairs
Every year, on the Saturday before July 24, we host a community breakfast and neighborhood celebration at First Encampment Park (500 East and 1700 South). Volunteers are needed to help with event setup and teardown. Volunteers are also needed to prepare and serve breakfast.
